Long story, prepare yourself a strong coffee or jump it over:
Before the rest of my "TFSOTW" upcoming doodles, some original idea first.
This has to do with Stephen's tortures: First, he's caugt by the French and Spanish on "HMS Surprise" , and tortured in a Port Mahon prision. Even if he didn't tell anything to the guards, he was badly damaged ( The rescue scene = one of the best O'Brian chapters ever!) and, as the series continue, Maturin declares that if he is caught again and tortured, he wont be able to resist the pain long enough ( for several reasons). He said this specially on book 7 ( The surgeon's mate) , while he was in prision with Jack and Jagiello. Thankfully, he wasn't tortured then. But, what if he had?
In one of those moments where I have enough time to think up a picture, I imagined how would be the next time Stephen and Jack were captured by the enemy, and Stephen lacked his laudanum for several days ( Yes, I'm THAT twisted
). He wouldn't get any sleep or tranquility, so he would start to get nervous, tired and scared, precisely what his enemies want before the interrogation. The final moments to him would be crucial, trying not to loose his wits. I don't know you, but if they came for me while I'm in prision, knowing what will happen next, I would be terrified, and would cling to the person next to me. That's what I wanted to "transmit": The door opens and Jack, as a true friend he is, has been calming down Stephen for hours (without success), they've come to search him, and we can only supose what's going to happen next...
Sorry for the long description, but if I were able to write short stories, this wouldn't have happened ( I'm good at descriptions and movements, but not in general script , and my dialog sucks) so I illustrated what would have been a drabble of open ending. You may try to write something if you want , slash or not ( I see this pictures in both ways)

Update!!!!! (24-3-06): Hell, I forgot to say it! You know, many of you draw while listening to music. Well, the piece that inspirated this ( that just created the mood for me) is "Until It Sleeps", by Apocaliptica . If you can, try to listen to it while watching the picture, you may discover something new

This is just like five thousand emotions packed into one picture! Or maybe just one really strong one, but it sure makes me feel all twisted inside. Knots up my stomach for Stephen, and then gets me all angry, and then I am happy that atleast Jack is there to hold him.
Just for kicks though, if you think about it, anyone could really be coming in that door. So.. what if it was Diana, finding out about Jack and Stephen's steamy love affair? hehehe... I know, I should be kicked.
Okay, in all seriousness, this is an amazing picture. That tiny sliver of light would in any normal circumstance probably resemble hope and the way you have altered that is just brilliant.
I can only imagine the look on Jack's face. Poor guy, he hates not being able to help.
