Portfolio for TAW by Steampunk-Girl Portfolio for TAW by Steampunk-Girl

It appears you don't have PDF support in this web browser. Download PDF

So, finally it's here, one of the reasons I've been so absent these last months (apart of all the work from university), my portfolio for The Animation Workshop in Viborg.

This is the result of several months of scanning and selecting past drawings and creating many new ones, attending life-drawing workshops for the first time in years and a long process of self-criticism and depuration. I still feel it could be improved, but somehow I think this represents me quite well, my style and likings in art.

I printed this and sent it a week ago to Denmark, and I really hope I receive a possitive answer and get pre-selected for the admission test, studying animation at TAW has been my dream for the past 3 and I really hope I get in :)

Click download to see a low-quality version of the pdf (the higher-re one weights 190 mbs!)

Thanks to all my friends for providing critiques and suggestions, specially :iconmiyu-himura: during the editing process, and to :iconskapanorn: for posting her portfolio for TAW, it's been of great help!

Enjoy!

Credits go for all the characters that aren't mine <3

Warning: contains naked ladies and dudes on the life-drawing section.

I'll be applying next year! :)
If I may ask
did they have a problem with using Deviantart for presenting the portfolio
or did you use a different way?

THANK YOU

Hi! Amazing portfolio, and I've read that you good accepted, so (very belated) congratulations!
I plan to apply for TAW next year and I'm wondering if you know whether artwork in portfolio should be in grayscale or can it be coloured? :?

depends on what you want to apply to. Character animation concentrates more on quick sketches and life drawing. But the CG Art bachelor demands a basic knowledge of color theory and design, so color pieces should be mandatory.

Personally I think a portfolio with colors stands out the most and it shows you can do more things aside from plain black and white stuff.

Hi! Wonderful portfolio! I am currently in the process of applying to TAW myself, and I was wondering if you knew what their stand is on using reference photos for the different categories? I couldn't find anything about it on their page... ^^;
Thanks!

I am too applying to the TWA and I am currently at the Drawing Academy so I hope I can help you out a bit.
When you say reference photos, I hope you mean that you just draw after and not copy the photo. If you make it your own  - say you are drawing a person throwing a ball then exaggerate it a bit and perhaps make a bit more dynamic - then I think you're good to go :)
It's not like they want you to the be new Walt Stanchfield so of course you can't invent totally new poses but as said, if you make it your own, then it's fine :)

Thanks, I figured it was like you said, but it's nice to hear it confirmed!
And of course I didn't mean copying, something tells me that wouldn't go over well ..! xD
Thanks again, and good luck with your application! :)

sorry, I am not sure if I understand what is the differences between “draw after” and “copy photo”. If possible could u please explain a little? Thanks a lot!

Draw after = take inspiration from - and create a drawing based on - the photo. Copy photo = create a drawing that is an exact replica of the photo. Hope that helps :)

Hi. I am also working on my TAW portfolio. I read the description and you said that the 'credits go for all the characters that aren't mine'. Does that mean that for the portfolio can be used even characters that are not original?

:iconsteampunk-girl:
Steampunk-Girl Featured By Owner Jul 7, 2013
Absolutely! Of course I suppose that they will like to see you use characters that are your own, or at least that aren't big copyrighted ones (mickey mouse, spiderman, etc.) There's nothing bad with it, but I guess it's extra points if you use original stuff that people can't mistake for something you might have copied or traced :V

Thanks. Also, one more question, if you don't mind. I was curious how things proceed after I send the portfolio. I know I'll have an exam and an interview and since I live in Italy I will have to do it online. If you have time and if it isn't too much of a bother, do you think you could explain me a bit how things went for you?

That's some great work! I live in Denmark and I also have a dream to go to TAW. I'm not nearly as good as you though X'D So it's gonna be a while I guess. Practise, practise, practise.

Did you get in? :) if so, on which education? animator, character creator etc? :)

Cool!

Your work is already great! How is the knowledge of the other students? I might need a semester course at Animation workshop before I can apply to the real program, since i'm not so good at sketching.

Thanks for answering :]

Cheers!

Oh, the level here is amazing... and I'm definetly not the best XD At least the CA program is full of people with very different styles, but they do know how to draw from life, create characters... Everybody is just so damn talented! Right now we're learning to inbetween and you can really see this is a group of people who are both hardworkers and love what they do :)

If you think you need to learn sketching and life drawing, I'll definetly recomend you to go to The Drawing Academy program they have. I have't been there, but half of my class have spent minimun a semester there and they were really happy about it (and their drawing skills are AMAZING!)

Hope to see you around if you get in ;)

Hey Talía!
I am really impressed with your work. I am currently sitting at the Animation Workshop, in the Open Workshop department. I am applying for the CGA this year. I am so glad I don't have to compete against you! Your portfolio is extremely good. I just wanted to give you a thumbs up, and say that I think yours is the best CA portfolio I have seen this year. A lot of my previous classmates from the Drawing Academy are applying fro CA as well, but I can tell you that you don't have anything to worry about.
Very good job. I hope I'll be seeing you in September! You'll love the school - it's amazing!

WOW! Thank you for this kind comment! It's great to hear such compliments from someone siting at the Animation Workshop, you cannot imagine how this has cheered me up. The portfolio arrived about a week ago to TAW, so I hope to hear anything from the school pretty soon, and hope they think the same thing as you!
I wish you the best of lucks for your CGA applycation, and hope to see you around in September too! ;)

I have never seen art portfolios as unique and interesting as yours! ;A; (then again, I haven't seen a lot of portfolios in general) It was a joy looking at every single page of the portfolio (YES EVEN THE LIFE DRAWINGS) and I hope the people over at TAW will be as impressed as I was while looking through this. I even loved how you added stuff from the TF2RP and other series as well (WOLVERINE GHSDAF) into the portfolio. I personally think it gives an edge and a good fact about yourself and how involved you are in animation. I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you continue to be awesome and inspiring! <3333
